"This years’ High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis of the United Nations General Assembly is a 'window of opportunities' for all of us, providing unique chances to enhance the global response to the long-standing worldwide tuberculosis epidemic," - stated Yuliia Kalancha during her opening remarks at the multi-sectoral meeting titled "Azerbaijan initiative to expand robust international commitments to end Tuberculosis by 2030: strong UN HLM 2023 Political Declaration agenda" held on July 5 in a hybrid format.
"The task for all of us - governments, international organizations, civil society representatives, and affected communities in countries - is to unite our efforts to shape an ambitious and effective Political Declaration on tuberculosis. After all, it is this document, supported by the governments of 193 UN member states through the High-Level Meeting, that will serve as a political guide for countries in the field of tuberculosis response for the next five years" - the speaker added.
During the event, attended by leaders and officers of relevant government bodies in Azerbaijan, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, the Executive Director of the TBEC drew attention to the importance of countries' accountability for the results of fulfilling the obligations of the Political Declaration. Additionally, the speaker reminded the meeting participants of the recommendations of the President of the General Assembly, outlined in the resolution on the format and conditions of the UNHLM on TB, regarding the inclusion of civil society organizations and affected communities' representatives in the official delegations to the UNHLM on TB.
