Yuliia Kalancha made a statement during the UN Multi-stakeholders hearings on Tuberculosis

The UN Multi-stakeholders hearings on Tuberculosis were held on May 8, 2023, in New York (USA). As part of a 3-hour event organized by the President of the General Assembly in the run-up to the UN High-Level Meeting on TB, representatives of civil society and communities, government organizations and national parliaments, scientific institutions, and other organizations made short statements regarding important key asks for inclusion in the Political Declaration. In addition, people affected by TB told hearing participants their stories, which showed what gaps still exist in the field of TB control and what difficulties people face in the process of diagnosing and treating TB.

On behalf of civil society in the WHO European Region, Yuliia Kalancha, TB Europe Coalition Executive Director and member of 2023 TB HLM Affected Communities and Civil Society Coordination Hub Leadership, made a statement. In her speech, she emphasized the key role of accountability and noted: “We don't want another fancy document, but a document that will hold countries committed and accountable. Accountability is not only part of a control mechanism but also a mechanism for bringing different sectors to collaborate together.”

Ms. Kalancha also highlighted that civil society and communities should be meaningfully engaged in TB response – fully funded and recognized as equal partners in decision-making, implementation, monitoring and reporting.

We hope that the statements made during the hearings will be taken into account when developing the draft UN HLM Political Declaration on TB!
