PUT YOUR MASK ON FIRST: Practical Tools for the Sustainability of CSOs and Communities Amidst Funding Cuts
STRATEGIES FOR
ALTERNATIVE TB FUNDING
With global funding cuts affecting civil society organizations and communities working to combat TB, the TB Europe Coalition stresses the urgent need to strengthen organizational resilience.
While maintaining services under existing funding remains critical, securing long-term sustainability is key to ensuring continued support for TB-affected communities.
A well-known rule in emergency situations — "Put your mask on first before assisting others" — serves as a powerful analogy for today’s reality. CSOs must first fortify their structures to effectively assist those in need.
As part of the Stop TB Partnership’s
global campaign for World TB Day — “Yes!
We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver” — TBEC is providing practical
tools to help CSOs build resilience and adapt to funding challenges.
Strengthening each coalition member enhances our collective impact, ensuring civil society remains a driving force in the fight against TB.
Possible strategies for alternative funding and practical recommendations for identifying new donors were extensively presented during the TBEC-organized webinar, held on March 3, 2025, with the support of the EECA Regional Platform.
During the event, "Adapting to Change: Strategies for Alternative TB Funding," participants were introduced to:
- CSO Resilience Kit (Speaker — Vlada Rabinova, TBEC Program Manager).
- Partnerships with National & Local Authorities: Successful country examples of expanding funding sources (Speaker — Cristina Celan, TBEC Board Member, Program Coordinator, Center for Health Policies and Studies (PAS Center)).
- Pharmaceutical sector & private businesses: Potential for collaboration to sustain TB response efforts (Speaker — Denis Godlevskiy, TBEC Board Member, Regional Coordinator, ITPC EECA).
- Experience of European Countries: Opportunities for securing additional funding (Speakers — Stefan Radut, TBEC Vice-Chair, Director, ASPTMR (Romania) & Mona Drage, TBEC Board Member, Director, International Tuberculosis Foundation (LHLI) (Norway)).
