Development of a Global Framework to Address Gender-Based Violence In Women Affected by TB

TBEC, as part of a consortium led by the School of Global Health at York University (Canada), is launching a new project to develop a global framework to address gender-based violence (GBV) among women affected by tuberculosis.

This three-year project will uniquely combine the complementary interdisciplinary expertise of social science researchers working on TB with experts in GBV and stigma, while also engaging partners from the TB community.

The key objectives of the project, which will be implemented in three high TB burden countries,  Indonesia, Ukraine, and South Africa, are:

  • To explore how women affected by TB, or those providing TB-related support, experience gender-based violence;
  • To develop a global framework for addressing GBV among women affected by TB, ensuring the active involvement of local communities.

In particular, qualitative research will be carried out in the participating countries, including in-depth interviews with women over the age of 18 who have completed TB treatment within the last three years, as well as with healthcare workers who have provided TB services during the same period.

This research will help identify existing gaps and develop recommendations to strengthen community-driven efforts to address GBV among women affected by TB.

In addition, a series of information materials will be produced, highlighting the stories of women who encountered gender-based violence during their TB treatment and care.
