A research project aimed at addressing gender-based violence against women affected by TB has been launched in Ukraine

A research project aimed at developing a conceptual framework to address gender-based violence against women affected by tuberculosis has been launched in Ukraine.

The objective of this study is to understand why and how women affected by TB experience gender-based violence, including women directly affected by TB as well as those who care for family members with TB.

Ukraine is one of three countries with a high TB burden (alongside Indonesia and South Africa) selected for this research. The study in Ukraine is coordinated by the TB Europe Coalition with support from York University (Canada) and in close collaboration with national partners.

The study will involve:

• women affected by TB and gender-based violence,

• healthcare and social workers who directly provide services to these women,

• community representatives and stakeholders whose work relates to the research topic.

Data will be collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. All participants will be invited to share their views, experiences, and perspectives on gender-based violence during TB treatment or while caring for people with TB, as well as in the context of service provision and decision-making.

At present, the study tools and protocol have already been adapted to the country context, and preparations are underway for submission to the ethics committee.

The findings are expected to inform the development of a global community-led framework aimed at addressing the causes, consequences, and response strategies related to gender-based violence in the context of TB.
